JSE flat as healthcare-led bid fades and Brent slide hits resources
The session shows how a single commodity move can unwind a broad risk-on open, leaving investors to weigh defensive strength against resource weakness before US PMI data.
Monday's session was defined by a tug-of-war between a healthcare-led risk-on bid and a 3.65% slide in Brent crude that pressured energy and mining shares, leaving the market barely changed.
How the day unfolded
The JSE opened with momentum from US and Asian equity strength, with the Top 40 up over 1% by midday as healthcare names led and the VIX eased. Brent crude's 3.65% slide to $100.08 then pressured energy and basic materials through the afternoon, and the market gave back most of its gains to close just 0.10% higher. Breadth improved to 87 advancers against 75 decliners, but the move stayed narrow, with financials and industrials outperforming while resources lagged.
The rand was flat at R16.24/USD, providing no directional cue. Financial 15 added 0.94% and the SA listed property index rose 0.83%, while Resource 20 fell 0.97% and construction and materials dropped 1.88%.

OCE 11-month update shows operating profit up but Africa fishmeal losses widen
Group operating profit rose year-on-year, driven by Daybrook USA and wild caught seafood, but Lucky Star canned fish volumes fell 9% and local canning production dropped 60% on raw material shortages.
The Africa fishmeal and fish oil segment's operating loss widened from interim levels despite a 31% rand price increase, while the squid business remained loss-making on weak catch rates.
Daybrook sales volumes rose 16% and wild caught seafood volumes rose 8%, with 70% of forecast fuel requirements hedged. Full-year results are due 26 November, leaving the picture uncertain until then.
HAR US$500m convertible bond at 1.5–2.0% coupon
Harmony launched a US$500 million guaranteed senior unsecured convertible bond due 2031, with a coupon expected between 1.500% and 2.000% and a conversion premium of 35–40% above the reference share price.
Net proceeds are earmarked only for general corporate purposes, and conversion would dilute existing shareholders by about 2.9% with up to 18.9 million new shares issuable. Final pricing is still being set via the accelerated bookbuild.
