JSE lower as financials and property slide; Trustco shares attached

A broad risk-off session hit financials and property hardest, while an interim Namibian court order over a 200m-share Trustco block leaves a legal overhang unresolved until November.

A weak rand and broad selling across financials and property set the tone on Thursday, but the day's sharpest corporate development came from a Namibian court ruling in the Trustco dispute.

How the day unfolded

The session opened with a mixed tone as a Nikkei surge lifted emerging-market sentiment, while corporate news created pockets of risk. By midday the JSE had turned risk-off, with the All Share down 0.38% and breadth weak at 35 advancers against 100 decliners, led lower by energy, real estate and consumer cyclicals.

The close confirmed the risk-off stance: the Top 40 ended 0.61% lower at 100,173 and the All Share 0.69% lower at 107,763, with 39 advancers against 112 decliners. Financials were the hardest hit — the Financial 15 fell 2.02% and banks 2.37% — while telecommunications (+0.85%), chemicals (+0.89%) and precious metals (+0.41%) held up.

A 1.71% weaker rand at R16.67/USD pressured SA Inc. names, while Brent's 3.10% jump to $101.07 did little for the energy sector, which closed 1.75% lower.

TTO Namibian court attaches 200m Trustco shares held by Riskowitz Value Fund

The High Court of Namibia granted an interim order on 25 September attaching 200,000,000 ordinary Trustco shares held by Riskowitz Value Fund LP, plus 1,135 unlisted Legal Shield Holdings shares. The Trustco court attachment operates with immediate effect, but it is an interim protective step rather than a final determination of ownership or control.

The order is returnable on 6 November 2026 under a rule nisi that specifically asks the court to confirm jurisdiction. That means the court has not yet decided whether it can hear the underlying dispute at all, and the filing does not state what Trustco is ultimately seeking or the economic value at stake.

The freeze creates immediate uncertainty over a large block of Trustco shares. The 6 November hearing will show whether the attachment becomes a durable win or a jurisdictional dead end.

BAC Africa Bitcoin Corporation loses CIO, defers Aquis listing and placing

Africa Bitcoin Corporation's chief investment officer Akshay Karan resigned effective 1 October 2026, and consultant Tatum Wheatley's engagement ends on 25 October. The company also deferred its proposed Aquis Growth Market admission and associated placing while it prioritises leadership changes and operational matters.

The filing frames the tribunal proceedings as personal to the individuals, but the cumulative signal is one of governance and operational disruption at a company that had already seen board resignations in September. The next update on permanent leadership and the Aquis timeline will determine whether this is a temporary setback or a deeper structural problem.

PHP Q3 rental growth ahead of target

Primary Health Properties generated £5.8m of extra income from 480 completed rent reviews in the first nine months, with annualised growth of 3.1% against a target of more than 3%. Growth was positive across all three portfolio segments: Primary Care UK at 2.8%, Private Hospitals at 3.7% and Ireland at 3.7%.

The Assura integration is complete and financial synergies are expected ahead of plan, while joint venture transactions remain on track with terms agreed and due diligence complete. Deleveraging remains prospective, however — the company is still working toward net debt to EBITDA below 9.5 times and LTV below 50%, rather than reporting those thresholds as achieved.

AII Aimia shares begin trading on London's AIM market

Aimia's common shares began trading on London's AIM market under ticker AII, adding a third venue alongside Toronto and Johannesburg. The Aimia AIM admission completes a listing first applied for in August, and no new financial information was disclosed. The next results or buyback update will show whether the broader listing is accompanied by progress on the intrinsic-value strategy.

WEZ Wesizwe completes Bakubung restructuring, underground development resumes

Wesizwe completed the section 189A consultation process at Bakubung Platinum Mine, affecting 429 positions with 30 compulsory retrenchments and the remainder taking voluntary separation packages. Underground infrastructure development and blasting resumed on 23 September 2026, and all severance payments were concluded by 30 September. The next operational update will show whether the resumed development translates into sustained progress.

SEA Spear REIT sets 22 October date for interim results

Spear REIT will release its interim results for the six months ended 31 August 2026 on Thursday, 22 October 2026, with an in-person and live-streamed presentation the same morning. The Spear REIT interim results notice contains no financial figures, but it gives investors a firm date to test the FY2027 DIPS growth guidance of 6% to 8% that management reaffirmed in June.

Movers explained

Canal+ SA (CNP) jumped 11.63% on no linked SENS, a move the autopsy classifies as technical or speculative. Putprop (PPR) rose 10.17% after a SENS announcement provided a direct catalyst, while Calgro M3 (CGR) and SPAR (SPP) gained on no apparent news. Pan African Resources (PAN) added 2.65% as the weaker rand supported its dollar gold revenues. On the downside, Jubilee Metals (JBL) fell 6.52% in a thinly traded line with no disclosed catalyst, and ArcelorMittal (ACL) dropped 6.30% despite Brent's 3.10% rise. Grindrod (GND) fell 5.52% in sympathy with the industrials sector, while Araxi (AXX) and PPC (PPC) declined with no clear fundamental catalyst.

Director dealings

Discovery directors disclosed nine on-market sales on 23 September totalling more than R117m, including R19.7m by CEO Adrian Gore and R47.8m by Hylton Kallner. Fortress Real Estate directors and the company secretary received multiple share scheme awards on 30 September, with individual values up to R11.8m. Cilo Cybin director Dr Tham Seng Kong made an off-market disposal of R22.4m on 29 September. Anglo American's seven director purchases were dividend reinvestments of 46 shares and carry no discretionary signal.

What we are watching

Thursday's close leaves the market watching the rand and financials into next week, with African Rainbow Minerals going ex-dividend on 6 October and Brent's direction still in focus. The Trustco jurisdiction hearing on 6 November and Spear REIT's 22 October interim results are the next concrete corporate dates.
