JSE edges higher as rand strength lifts domestic-facing shares

The rand's strength and late-session breadth recovery show domestic-facing demand is holding, even as resources and technology lag and Tongaat's delisting approaches.

A firmer rand and a risk-on global backdrop set a constructive tone on the JSE, with domestic-facing shares carrying the session into a modestly positive close.

How the day unfolded

Monday opened with a risk-on US session and a stronger rand setting up SA Inc. names. By midday the tape was mixed: financials led while resources dragged, leaving the All Share down 0.07% at 108,446 and breadth negative at 68 decliners against 59 advancers. Into the close, industrials and financials led a recovery, with the rand strengthening further to 16.54 against the dollar and breadth improving sharply to 98 advancers against 54 decliners. The Top 40 closed up 0.20% at 100,964 and the All Share up 0.22% at 108,760. Sector leaders included Industrials (+0.98%), Financials (+0.77%), Energy (+0.85%), Banks (+0.93%) and Construction & Materials (+2.07%), while Technology (-0.52%), Real Estate (-0.39%), SA Listed Property (-0.43%) and Precious Metals & Mining (-0.29%) lagged. BOX Boxer Retail delivers 9.2% HEPS growth and a 10.2% dividend increase

Boxer Retail reported headline earnings per share up 9.2% to 124.83 cents for the 26 weeks ended 30 August 2026, recovering from a prior-year decline of 15%. Trading profit rose 8.1% to R1 006 million and the trading profit margin expanded 0.1 percentage point to 4.2%.

Profit before tax and capital items increased 10.6% to R774 million, and the interim dividend was lifted 10.2% to 49.93 cents per share, a 40.0% payout ratio. Net cash excluding lease liabilities improved to R2.3 billion from R0.7 billion at 1 March 2026.

The company cautioned that the consumer remains constrained amid selling-price deflation and that the anticipated food-inflation uplift has been delayed, with no quantified FY27 HEPS guidance provided.

XII Numeral's headline earnings per share collapse 84.37% despite revenue and operating profit growth

Numeral reported revenue up 7.10% to USD 1 073 192 and operating profit up 3.22% to USD 792 935 for the six months ended 31 August 2026, but headline and basic earnings per share both fell 84.37% to USD 0.0078.

The short-form announcement offers no explanation for the divergence between operating profit growth and the bottom-line collapse, and no dividend was declared. The figures are unaudited and not reviewed by the auditors, while prior-period figures were restated.

The filing also provides no cash or balance sheet figures, leaving the full announcement on the JSE website as the next place to test what drove the decline below the operating line.

TON Tongaat Hulett to be delisted from the JSE on 3 November 2026 with no value expected for shareholders

The JSE has decided to remove Tongaat Hulett's listing effective 3 November 2026, after the company's own directors and business rescue practitioners confirmed that no business rescue outcome would leave an operating business or any value for shareholders. The company has been suspended since July 2022 and cannot produce audited financial statements.

After removal, shareholders will retain unlisted shares that will not be tradable on the electronic STRATE platform, and the company advises that no future distributions should be expected.
