Top 40 slips 0.55% as Finbond loss, Valterra output drop and Tiger buyback land

A rand-hedge energy rally and a consumer-cyclical sell-off show how currency and sector rotation are driving JSE returns, while Finbond's impairment-led loss and Valterra's production setback test the earnings recovery.

A weaker rand and a risk-off global tape split the JSE on Friday: USD-earning miners and energy names found support, while SA Inc. and consumer cyclicals bore the brunt, and Finbond's confirmed headline loss set the tone for credit-sensitive counters.

How the day unfolded

The session opened defensively after US equities fell overnight and the VIX spiked, with a weaker rand cushioning USD-earning miners while SA Inc. faced headwinds. The rand weakened 1.38% to R16.60/USD, while gold and platinum slipped.

By midday the market rotated higher, led by telecoms and energy, with Pick n Pay up on its trading statement and consumer cyclicals lagging. Into the close the gains faded: the Top 40 slipped 0.55% and the All Share 0.47%, as consumer discretionary and basic materials dragged, while energy and telecoms held gains.

FGL Finbond confirms guided headline loss as credit impairments bite

Finbond's unaudited interim results for the six months to August 2026 landed inside its own guidance: a headline loss per share of 5.9 cents, against the 5.8–6.0 cent guided range, with basic earnings per share of 1.7 cents. The result confirms the deterioration the market was told about on 16 October rather than a fresh shock.

The damage came from credit: higher impairments at Finbond Mutual Bank and conservative lending at newer branches, which attracted customers carrying higher credit risk and longer lead times to profitability. Net interest income rose 1.7% to R211.2 million.

There were positives: net loans and advances grew 14.5% to R762.7 million, and net cash utilised in operating activities halved to R34.7 million. The board declared no interim dividend, leaving the earnings trend dependent on evidence that impairments have peaked.

VAL Valterra Q3 production falls sharply on safety stoppages and maintenance re-phasing

Valterra's third-quarter production report showed own-mined PGM output down 5% to 511,900 ounces, refined production down 41% to 576,900 ounces, and sales volumes down 27% to 683,300 ounces. The declines followed a fatal fall-of-ground incident at Amandelbult and the re-phasing of processing maintenance into the quarter.

Full-year guidance of 3.0–3.4 million ounces is unchanged, and Amandelbult returned to steady-state production by quarter-end. Cash operating unit costs are expected at the upper end of R19,000–R20,000 per PGM ounce, so the fourth-quarter step-up will be the test.

TBS Tiger Brands completes R1.31bn buyback of 3.06% of shares

Tiger Brands repurchased 4,878,363 shares, 3.06% of shares in issue, for R1,309,491,518 under the February 2026 AGM authority, at prices between R239.71 and R295.14. The cash balance fell by R1.31bn including costs, and 1,384,334 shares are still to be cancelled on or about 28 October.

Standard Bank's Mr SK Tshabalala executed an off-market sale of R2.94m and a matching indirect acquisition of the same amount on 21 October, suggesting a restructuring rather than a change in economic interest. iOCO's Rhys Summerton acquired R7.72m indirectly on 14 October.

What we are watching

We are watching the USD/ZAR direction after Friday's 1.38% weakening, the follow-through in consumer cyclicals, and the GLPROP dividend payment. Tiger Brands' remaining 1,384,334 repurchased shares are due for cancellation on or about 28 October.
