JSE flat as Vodacom HEPS guide and Northam upgrade anchor mixed session

Investors looking past the index saw a disclosure-heavy day: Vodacom's HEPS range shows operating momentum, Northam's GCR upgrade validates its balance sheet, and Prosus sets its payout timeline.

A flat, drift-prone session on the JSE left the benchmark indices little changed, while the day's real news sat in single-stock filings: Vodacom's trading statement quantified a strong HEPS range even as its headline EPS was inflated by a Safaricom remeasurement.

How the day unfolded

The session opened constructively on overnight tech strength, with the Nasdaq 100 up 1.18% and the VIX easing, while the rand sat flat around 16.65/USD. By midday the tape had turned mixed: energy and basic materials led on firmer Brent, but breadth was weak at 65 advancers against 67 decliners.

The gains faded into the close. The Top 40 ended 0.04% lower at 101,567 and the All Share slipped 0.06% to 109,759, with breadth deteriorating to 71 advancers against 85 decliners. Financials and life insurance provided support, while food producers, telecommunications and healthcare were the clear laggards. Brent rose 1.73% and platinum gained 0.75%, but the rand's 0.24% move to 16.672/USD kept currency out of the equation.

VOD Vodacom guides interim HEPS up 22–27%, EPS inflated by Safaricom gain

Vodacom's trading statement guides interim HEPS to between 570c and 593c, a 22–27% increase on the prior period's 467c.

The reported EPS line is far larger — 1,756c to 1,789c, up 272–279% — but almost all of that is a R23.2bn tax-neutral, non-recurring fair-value gain on the Safaricom associate remeasurement, worth about 1,199c per share. Vodacom explicitly excludes that gain from HEPS.

The filing provides no segmental revenue or EBITDA breakdown and no cash-flow data, so investors cannot yet see whether the HEPS growth is broad-based and cash-backed. The company says the interim results will be consistent with its medium-term growth ambitions.

The 10 November results are the next test: whether the operating businesses, rather than the remeasurement, are doing the work.

NPH GCR upgrades Northam Platinum to AA(ZA) on stronger balance sheet

GCR upgraded Northam Platinum's long-term issuer rating to AA(ZA) from A+(ZA) and its short-term rating to A1+(ZA) from A1(ZA), both with a stable outlook. The agency cited lower costs, growing volumes, a net ungeared balance sheet and robust liquidity after record results for the year ended 30 June 2026.

The upgrade independently validates the operational improvement and points to stronger financial flexibility to fund capital expenditure. The stable outlook rests on continued project execution and supportive commodity prices, which remain the external risk.

PRX Prosus finalises FY2026 distribution timetable

Prosus finalised its FY2026 distribution, confirming a 28 euro cent capital repayment per N share as the default with a dividend election option, and set the 25 November election deadline. The amounts and structure were first announced on 27 August, so this is timetable and tax paperwork. SA tax-resident shareholders who elect a dividend may face up to 20% effective dividend tax.

Movers explained

The session's biggest gainers mostly lacked disclosed catalysts. Araxi (AXX) jumped 17.29% to R1.56 and Canal+ SA (CNP) rose 10.40% to R52.99 with no SENS or macro event — CNP's move came even as its sector lagged. iOCO (IOC) added 5.19% on a SENS-linked flag but the headline was not supplied, while Orion Minerals (ORN, +4.17%) and 4Sight (4SI, +3.08%) were thinly traded with no confirmed catalyst. On the downside, Hulamin (HLM) fell 5.04% and Master Drilling (MDI) lost 4.55% with no disclosed driver; Coronation (CML) dropped 4.55% on a bearish voluntary trading update/AUM update, and Clicks (CLS) slipped 4.44% in sympathy with a softer healthcare sector. Choppies (CHP) declined 4.49% in thin trade with no direct catalyst.

Director dealings

Capitec director associates made indirect acquisitions totalling roughly R597m on 26 October, the largest director-related purchases in the pack. Primary Health Properties directors received LTIP awards, and CEO Mark Davies made an on-market purchase of R130,624, while Claire Howell purchased R49,744.

What we are watching

Impala Platinum's AGM and the market's reaction to Vodacom's guidance are the immediate watch items, with communication services and financial services momentum the sector threads to follow. Breadth's recovery or further deterioration will set the tone. Dated events ahead include the 25 November Prosus election deadline and the KAP and Bidvest AGMs on 30 November and 1 December.
