JSE sinks as gold and platinum slide, Dis-Chem drops 12.6%

The resource-led selloff exposed the sector's sensitivity to commodity prices, while company updates from MC Mining, Grand Parade and Nu-World added a dividend and funding angle to a broadly defensive session.

Friday turned decisively risk-off as falling gold and platinum prices hammered the resource sector, and Dis-Chem's interim results delivered the session's sharpest single-stock drop. The mood never recovered through the afternoon.

How the day unfolded

Overnight weakness in US and Japanese tech, plus a climbing Brent crude price, set a cautious tone, and Dis-Chem's interim results were flagged as bearish into the open. By midday the All Share was down 0.95% and the Top 40 down 1.01%, with Resource 10 off 2.76% and Dis-Chem already down 9.7%.

Selling accelerated through the afternoon. The Top 40 closed down 2.42% and the All Share down 2.20%, with Precious Metals & Mining down 6.19%, Basic Materials down 4.91% and banks down 2.33%. Financial 15 lost 1.95%. Consumer staples (+0.76%), beverages (+2.30%), telecommunications (+0.71%) and chemicals (+1.01%) held up. The rand weakened 0.48% to R16.69/USD, a tailwind for dollar-earning miners that was overwhelmed by the commodity slide.

MCZ MC Mining suspends all operations as cash falls to US$170,000

MC Mining made real operational progress at Makhado in the September quarter, delivering 4,846 tonnes of hard coking coal to Matola Port and entering sales agreements for about 46kt of finished product. But the funding position has overtaken the operational story.

Available cash and facilities fell to US$170,000 at quarter-end from US$2.9 million three months earlier, and all operations are now temporarily suspended while final funding arrangements are concluded.

Part of KDG's capital support remains conditional on Makhado having commenced production, while commissioning and handover were still incomplete at the quarter's end. The next funding announcement will determine whether the halt is a short pause or something longer.

GPL Grand Parade's HEPS falls 34%, but board declares 12c dividend

Grand Parade's audited FY26 numbers landed where management guided: headline earnings per share fell 34% to 10.19 cents, and basic EPS dropped 45% to 7.84 cents, on lower equity-accounted earnings from gaming investments and impairment charges.

The board nevertheless declared a final gross dividend of 12 cents per share from income reserves, versus nil for FY2025, payable on 7 December 2026. The earnings decline was pre-flagged; the dividend is the genuinely new information.

OAO Oando's Q3 profit slides 73% as 9M bottom line halves on debt costs

Oando's Q3 profit fell about 73% year-on-year to N37.9 billion, with revenue and operating income also down sharply, making the quarter a clear step back.

Over nine months the upstream recovery is real: average production rose 14% to 42,985 boepd, unit operating costs fell 22%, and the group swung to a N159.7 billion operating profit from a N109.7 billion loss. But profit after tax still fell 47% to N106.5 billion as N244.2 billion of finance costs on acquisition debt absorbed the gains.

NWL Nu-World lifts dividend 24.8% despite flat earnings

Nu-World held headline earnings per share essentially flat at 395.5 cents (+0.9%) for the year to August 2026, while revenue slipped 1.8% to R2.25 billion under pressure on consumer discretionary spending.

The board lifted the full-year dividend 24.8% to 185.30 cents per share from 148.5 cents, declared from profits available for distribution. That payout increase is the standout item in an otherwise flat result.

CPP Collins Property lifts interim dividend to 55c and plans R2.7bn disposals

Collins Property Group declared a 55-cent interim dividend, up from 52 cents, after distributable income per share rose to 64 cents and collections hit 100% for the half to August 2026.

The balance sheet is the bigger story: the group is selling about R2.7 billion of non-core properties to cut its loan-to-value ratio from 49% to 43%. Revenue slipped as the disposal programme reduced the portfolio, but that is the intended cost of deleveraging.

TMT Trematon's Generation Education disposal clears final regulatory hurdle

Trematon Capital Investments has received the TRP compliance certificate, confirming all conditions for the Generation Education Group disposal have been fulfilled or waived, and the transaction will now be implemented. The notice does not restate the consideration or any earnings impact, leaving the implementation details and use of proceeds as the next disclosures to watch.

IOC iOCO buys back 17.7 million shares, cumulative buybacks reach 5.4%

iOCO repurchased 17,691,842 shares between 14 and 29 October at an average of 400 cents, spending R70.7 million excluding costs. Cumulative buybacks since August 2025 now total 34,457,696 shares, about 5.4% of issued capital, all held as treasury shares. The filing gives no earnings or valuation rationale.

ORN Orion names largest shareholder Tom Borman as incoming chair

Orion Minerals will hand the chair to Tom Borman, a former BHP executive holding about 14.3% of shares, effective from the close of the 26 November AGM. Long-serving chair Denis Waddell retires, and Godfrey Gomwe becomes senior independent non-executive director.

Movers explained

Lesaka's 5.71% gain and Cashbuild's 3.03% rise had no disclosed catalyst, and Hulamin's 2.68% move also lacks a SENS headline or clear macro trigger. Cell C rose 4.62% with the communication services sector, while Orion's 4% gain followed its board succession news on a thinly traded line. On the downside, Dis-Chem fell 12.63% after its interim results, the clearest catalyst in the group. Northam, Pan African and Sibanye Stillwater fell 7.28%, 6.95% and 6.43% respectively in sympathy with the basic materials sell-off, while Jubilee's 6.98% drop is best read as an illiquid technical move with no disclosed catalyst.

What we are watching

Attention turns to tomorrow's corporate diary and the resource complex, with BYI, KST, TLM and VUN on the radar and Basic Materials still the sector to watch after Friday's selloff. Further out, Grand Parade's 12-cent dividend is payable on 7 December and Orion's AGM sits on 26 November.
