JSE closes higher as Pick n Pay results land and Renergen hits helium milestone

The session's through-line was a broad risk-on rally, but the real signal came from Pick n Pay's operating recovery and Renergen's helium milestone, which give investors concrete progress to track.

Monday's session on the JSE closed firmly higher, with broad participation across sectors and a weaker rand supporting dollar earners. The single story that mattered most was Pick n Pay's interim results, which showed the operating recovery is gaining traction but the turnaround is still unfinished.

How the day unfolded

Trading opened cautiously as a weaker rand supported USD earners while global risk appetite frayed ahead of Pick n Pay's results. By midday the JSE had turned firmly risk-on, with the Top 40 up 1.18% and Basic Materials leading on the currency move.

The close confirmed the rally: the Top 40 finished +0.99% to 100,977 and the All Share +1.03% to 109,130, with 125 advancers against 26 decliners. Financials, Industrials and Healthcare led the advance, while Technology, Chemicals and Beverages lagged.

The rand weakened 0.95% to R16.64/USD, a tailwind for dollar-earning resource names, though Brent fell 1.51% to weigh on energy-linked counters.

PIK Pick n Pay H1 FY27 losses land within guided ranges as trading profit rises 58.1%

Pick n Pay's interim results for the 26 weeks ended 30 August 2026 showed a headline loss per share of 40.71 cents, a 31.9% improvement on the prior period and within the 25% to 35% range the company guided four days earlier. Basic loss per share of 36.77 cents also landed within its 40% to 50% band.

The operating engine was the story: group trading profit rose 58.1% to R490 million, while group turnover increased 2.4% to R60.5 billion. Boxer grew profit before tax and capital items by 10.6% and opened its 600th store, and the Pick n Pay segment's trading loss narrowed 16.9% on gross margin accretion and contained expense growth.

The conclusion and withdrawal of the Section 189A labour consultation removed a major uncertainty, and the new store labour model is intended to improve scheduling flexibility and cost management. Pick n Pay's South African supermarket like-for-like sales in the four weeks after period-end were slightly ahead of the H1 run rate.

The turnaround remains unfinished: the group still recorded a R1.1 billion trading loss after lease interest, and management flagged low visibility on the rest of FY27 because elevated oil prices are affecting food inflation, logistics costs and consumer spending. The market's next test is whether gross margin gains and the labour deal's cost benefits support the FY29 break-even target.

ISO Renergen's Virginia Gas Project achieves stable liquid helium production

ASP Isotopes announced that Tetra4, Renergen's subsidiary, has completed commissioning and achieved stable liquid helium production at the Virginia Gas Project, with liquid helium accumulating in cryogenic storage ahead of initial deliveries under existing offtake agreements.

The Phase 1 plant is expected to reach nameplate capacity during the fourth quarter of 2026, producing about 2,500 GJ/day of LNG and 70 Mcf/day of liquid helium. The milestone makes this South Africa's first integrated producer of both liquid helium and LNG, against a backdrop of acute global helium shortage, though first deliveries and sustained output are still needed before the revenue story is proven.

CLS FMR LLC and Old Mutual each disclose beneficial interests above 5% in Clicks

Clicks Group filed statutory notices under section 122(3)(a) of the Companies Act showing FMR LLC's total beneficial interest at 5.20% and Old Mutual Limited's at 5.04% of ordinary shares in issue.

The filing gives no transaction prices, prior holding levels, or investor intent, so the disclosures put two sizeable institutional holders on the register but offer no directional signal.

BYI Camissa Asset Management trims Bytes stake below 10%

Camissa Asset Management's voting rights in Bytes Technology Group fell from 10.93% to 9.89%, with the resulting position reported when the threshold was crossed on 22 October 2026. The TR-1 form states the move but gives no reason for it, so a single threshold crossing is not evidence of a view on the business. Further filings would be needed to show whether this is a one-off adjustment or the start of a broader exit.

Movers explained

Gainers were led by Accelerate Property Fund, up 19.51% to R0.49, but the ordinary share is thinly traded and the move is treated as an illiquid technical print rather than a broad Real Estate signal. ArcelorMittal South Africa rose 9.02% and Afrimat 6.22% with no SENS catalyst or coherent macro explanation; Lewis Group added 6.09% despite a weaker rand that is normally a headwind for a domestic retailer. SAB Zenzele Kabili's 6.25% gain tracked the 1.53% rise in the Financial Services index.

On the downside, eMedia fell 5.56% and Invicta 4.28% with no disclosed catalyst, with Invicta's decline coming even as the Industrials index rose 1.87%. Araxi's 5.11% drop followed the 0.92% fall in the Technology index. Sasol lost 3.51% as Brent fell 1.51%, a commodity headwind that outweighed the weaker rand's support, and Anheuser-Busch InBev declined 2.69% as the weaker rand pressured a domestic consumer stock.

What we are watching

Tuesday's focus turns to whether the Technology sector's 0.92% decline extends, and whether Sasol can stabilise after its 3.51% drop despite the weaker rand. Pick n Pay's results will be followed for any update on the FY29 break-even path, while the rand's direction against the dollar remains a key swing factor. Prosus's delayed distribution finalisation announcement is due on 28 October.
