JSE rallies as MTN and Gold Fields lead; Energy lags on Brent slide
A single quarterly release and a permitting milestone set a broad risk-on tone, but the energy complex showed how quickly a commodity slide can carve out a pocket of weakness.
A risk-on afternoon swept the JSE on Monday, with MTN's Nigeria quarterly results and Gold Fields' Windfall environmental approval providing the sparks, while sliding Brent crude left energy shares as the day's clear laggard.
How the day unfolded
The session opened cautiously after a risk-off US session and a weaker rand, with gold miners finding support while early trade was defensive. By midday, MTN's surge had driven narrow gains, with the Top 40 up 1.10% and the All Share up 0.98%, while Energy lagged as Brent slid. Communication Services was the standout sector.
The close extended the rally: the Top 40 finished +2.04% and the All Share +1.77%, led by Communication Services, Basic Materials and Healthcare. Energy, Oil, Gas and Coal, and Chemicals were the clear laggards as Brent fell 6.47%, while the rand was little changed.

MTN MTN Nigeria Q3 results drive 7.41% surge
MTN surged after MTN Nigeria quarterly results for the quarter ended 30 September 2026 were released on the Nigerian exchange. The SENS notice itself carried no figures, only a pointer to that release.
The move led the Communication Services sector to a 5.92% gain, with Canal+ SA also advancing in sympathy.
Nigeria is MTN's largest earnings contributor, so the quarterly release can materially shift group earnings expectations.
The subscriber, fintech and earnings detail remains in the linked MTN Nigeria release rather than the SENS filing.
GFI Windfall environmental approval clears path to construction
Gold Fields gained after securing Québec's principal environmental authorisation for the Windfall project, the Gold Fields Windfall environmental approval. The Certificate of Authorisation was issued on 30 October 2026 and permits construction and full project development.
Once ramped up, Windfall is expected to produce about 300,000 ounces of gold a year. Gold added 2.11% and the Basic Materials index rose 2.96%, providing further support.
The Final Investment Decision remains subject to Board approval, with the development capital estimate and updated construction schedule expected only with the February 2027 provisional results.
EEL Potential transaction terminated; liquidation hearing unresolved
Efora Energy's board rejected a final offer and terminated the potential transaction without agreement. The filing did not disclose the terms of the rejected offer.
A liquidation application brought by Seodi Coal was struck from the High Court's urgent roll but remained set down for hearing on 2 November 2026. Shareholders were told to keep exercising caution.
IVT H1 HEPS guided 25–29% lower
Invicta expects headline earnings per share for the six months to 30 September 2026 to fall 25% to 29% to between 189 and 199 cents, from 265 cents a year earlier.
Basic EPS is guided 15% to 21% lower, and management said the full benefits of its initiatives will only show in the next financial year. The interim results are due on 23 November.
RDF HEPS nearly doubles and dividend up 7%
Redefine's FY26 headline earnings per share rose 98.6% to 72.97 cents, from 36.74 cents. Distributable income per share increased 7.0% to 56.08 cents and the dividend followed, up 7.0% to 49.06 cents.
The group ended the year with R7.3 billion in undrawn committed facilities and cash. Management guided FY27 distributable income growth of 3.0% to 5.0%, against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and higher-for-longer interest rates.
AEL HY27 HEPS up 14%, dividend up 15%
Altron's continuing-operations HEPS rose 14% to 109 cents, revenue grew 5% to R5.1 billion, and the interim dividend was lifted 15% to 55 cents.
Cash conversion improved to 92% and the group is in a net cash position. The result lands inside the 107 to 112 cent range guided at the September trading statement, with the Netstar reset year and Altron Security weakness the medium-term watch points.
APN Ovestin sale to Ennogen for EUR 197m
Aspen agreed to sell the European commercialisation rights and related IP for its women's health product Ovestin to Ennogen for EUR 197 million, plus an estimated EUR 4 million for inventory — the Aspen Ovestin divestment to Ennogen.
The disposal is expected to generate about ZAR 2 billion profit against a net asset value of ZAR 1.60 billion. Proceeds will follow Aspen's capital allocation model, where share buybacks remain preferred, with completion conditional on Ennogen's funding becoming unconditional.
EXP Revenue up 13.8% but HEPS down 6.9%
Exemplar REITail's revenue grew 13.8% to R847.3 million and net property income rose 13.0%, but headline earnings per share fell 6.9% to 68.39 cents.
